तामाङ्हरुको पुर्ख्योलि भूमिलाई ताम्सालिङ भनिन्छ । ताम्सालिङ शब्दलाई केलाएर हेर्दा 'ताम' को अर्थ तामाङहरुको  बोल्ने भाषा, 'सा' भनेको भूमि र 'लिङ' भन्नाले खण्ड वा भाग भन्ने हुन्छ । यस अर्थमा ताम्सालिङ भन्नाले तामाङभाषीहरुको भूखण्ड भन्ने हुन आउंदछ ।  तामाङ शब्दको उल्लेख भएको लिखित दस्तावेज एघारौं शताब्दिको मुस्ताङ भोटसम्मको इतिहासमा भेटिएतापनि वर्तमान ताम्सालिङ काठमाण्डौ उपत्यका वरिपरिको मध्य पहाडी र हिमाली भूभागलाई मानिन्छ ।  नेपाल बाहिर तामाङहरुको  बसोबास उत्तर-पूर्वी भारतको पश्चिम बंगाल, सिक्किम, आसाम, पूर्बमा भुटान र बर्मा सम्म र उत्तरमा तिब्बतको दक्षिण-पश्चिमको केरुङ र सिगात्सेसम्म पनि फैलिएको पाइन्छ भने हाल तामाङहरु थाईल्याण्ड, हङकङ, बेलायत, क्यानाडा, अष्ट्रेलिया, कत्तार, अमेरिका आदि मुलुकहरुमा फैलिएर बसोबास गर्दै आएका छन ।

 What is the meaning of Tamsaling ?

The ancestral land of the Tamang people is known as Tamsaling.  Tamsaling means 'Tam' refers to the language spoken by Tamang people, 'sa' refers to the land and 'ling' refers to the territory or fragment. So, Tamsaling means the land of Tamang tongue speaking people. Tamsaling bordered by Likhu Koshi river in East, Budhi Gandaki in West, Mahabharat range in South and Himalayan range in North is the main homeland of Tamang community.  They are also scattered all over the country, and outside Nepal they are found in large numbers in Darjeeling, Sikkim, Assam and Nagaland of India, Kerung and Sigatse of Tibet and in Burma and Bhutan.
